In ELA we learned how characters and theme are related. I learned that they are related because they effect one another if something changes. Also I learned they both make up a story.
Today we learned how theme is related to plot by doing group activities for the "3 little pigs" We had 2 endings and we saw that the themes changed as the plot changed. So I learned that plot is related to theme because when one changes so will the other.
In ELA we did presentations, I learned that if we don't take much breathes during our presentation then we tend to talk fast. Another thing I learned is that When we make eye contact we have to make sure we are looking at everybody. If you focus too much on your flashcards then you wont have much eye contact with your audience.
During class our teacher instructed us to do a presentation in front of the class on how we measure our success. We could use a PowerPoint, a video, or a storyboard. I learned that I needed to go to wrap text to crop my pictures when placing them on my PowerPoint. I also learned that our evidence was our explanation since this is our opinion on our success.
In ELA we examined 2 articles to see how success is measured. I learned that some people think that success is measured by achieving your goals. In the second article it suggests that success is measured by doing new things.
"I Hear America Sing" by Walt Whitman was a poem about everyone in America has a different melody. I learned that he uses melodies to describe the type of work people do and how different they are. This poem was a positive look on work I guess, but according to the poem "Let America Be America Again" No matter how most of us try our goal just doesn't get met since our life isn't easy. I learned that both of these poets were living in a different time which does effect the poem.
During ELA class after finishing "The Outsiders" book we watched the movie to compare the differences between the book and the movie. Some things that I learned was that the movie didn't exactly show all of the scenes in the movie. I didn't really like how the scenes were rushed since the scenes had much more time in it but making a movie without making it being long would be hard which is reasonable. The characters were all what I imagined them to be since the personality matched pretty well but I think Ponyboy was a bit motionless in the movie rather than it sounded in the book. I also learned that this movie was make when 8th graders wrote letters to a director to make a movie for this book .
During ELA we created a tree diagram. On the tree diagram we were to figure out which quote was a metaphor, personification, slang, or simile with the definition with each word.
After we matched the quotes we wrote what the quote meant and why the author used it for "The Outsiders" This tree diagram is a study tool to help us with a up coming test we will have later and to understand how to match a quote or find a quote then decide which kind of word it would be described as. With this I learned how to identify whether the phrase is a metaphor, personification, slang, or simile. In ELA we examined a quote from Robert Frost called "Nothing gold can stay" And what our thoughts were on the poem.I thought the poem meant that when were born we are like gold(precious no sin) But as life goes one we change and depending on the choices we make. Our life can turn from bad and nothing golden can stay In life. From this I learned that life can be compared to things like nature.
